So Why Not The Toy Store?
I know, I know. $3.99 for a kid’s hula hoop seems too good to be true, right? I thought I could learn with a kid’s hoop too, and let’s just say that I learned the hard way with a lot of sweat and frustration that I was quite wrong. Kid’s hoops are far too light and small. We might all be kids at heart, but our hoops are adult-sized for a reason.
Size Does Matter
Simple physics apply! The larger the hoop, the slower the rotation around the body. Most beginners will find success with a 38 to 42 inch diameter hoop, depending on their height and weight.
Weighing In
I get a lot of questions about “weighted” hoops - read this for more information. The hoops that I sell are generally just under 2 pounds. However, there are “weighted” hoops out there that can weigh 3, 4, even 5 or more pounds! If you intend to use your hoop for hoopdancing, as I do, a weighted hoop will limit your movements and the tricks you will be able to do comfortably.
Anything Else I Need To Know?
Take good care of your hoop! Try to keep your hoop off of rough surfaces like sidewalk cement so the tape doesn’t scratch or tear. And keep in mind that if you leave your hoop in your car on a warm day, you could end up with a warped hoop due to the heat.
