Four years ago, World Hoop Day was on September 9, 2009 , and we organized a hoop jam at the Alberta Legislature. It was a small turnout but not bad for our first year.
Four years later, World Hoop Day was celebrated this past Wednesday on December 12, 2012, indoors and out of the cold at the Bosco gym. This year’s turnout? Off the charts! The gym was packed within half an hour of opening the doors, and remained that way all night!
Nina of Infinity Hoopdance and I taught a beginner hoop workshop to kick off the event, to a gym full of new hoopers who got a taste of waist hooping and off-body tricks. Then we kicked off the big hoop jam with an introduction by Emily of the 124 Youth Program, (the group receiving a donation of new hoops purchased with the evening’s proceeds), and a beautiful moment of intention-setting led by Kacie Knight.
It was a truly beautiful event, and more than once throughout the night I was blown away by just how far our community has come, and how much we’ve grown. To everybody who came out, to everybody contributed to the event with your smiles, your dance, your participation – thank you. (And to all of the new hoopers I got to meet – welcome!) To my partner-in-crime, Nina Infinity, for co-creating this amazing event, thank you.
At the rate our community is growing, I can’t imagine where we’re going to put you all next year, Edmonton hoopers, but you can bet wherever it is, it will be awesome!
